Building History
Galley 1014 opened in 1924, housing the City Club of Saint Louis and the 8-story Missouri Hotel.
In 1933, during the Great Depression, the City Club folded and the Missouri Hotel moved to a different location. At this time the entire building was rebranded as the elegant and locally famous Hotel DeSoto which operated in the building through the mid-1950s.
In 1956, the Archdiocese of Saint Louis purchased the building and opened the Alverne Hotel for retire parishioners. Much of the original 1920s ornamentation and upper balconies were removed at this time, however new modernist artworks were installed, including a mosaic by Ravenna Mosaic which still survives.
The Alverne Hotel closed in the late 1980s and the building remained largely vacant until the recent extensive renovations into the grand Gallery 1014 Luxury Apartments.
